Melba, Florida—In the summer of 2013, two college students had a dream: they wanted to create a web-based mobile application that could solve problems for students in high school.
The app would be a mobile version of a program they had designed a year earlier, and they called it The Project.
The Project is an app for teenagers who are interested in computer science.
Students can use the app to help with homework, and it’s also available for use by teachers, parents, and peers.
In this video, Adam and Saman Gourley talk about the app, its inspiration, and how they created their app.
The app is now the #1 app in the world on App Annie, a website that measures the popularity of apps based on the number of installs.
In 2016, the app had over 17 million downloads, and its ratings were high for its simplicity.
“We’ve seen a lot of changes in the last two years, and we’ve seen so many kids using the app,” Adam Gourler, a junior at Florida Atlantic University, told NBC News.
“We wanted to see what we could do differently to make it even more appealing to a wider audience.”
Adam and Samam Gourlay developed the app because they wanted a mobile app that they could use in their classroom and that students could use to help them solve problems.
The couple said that when they created the app in 2014, it was just a few ideas, but in the years since, they’ve worked on more than 70 ideas.
Adam Gourell told NBC that he was inspired to start The Project by an email from his high school teacher, who asked him what he was doing.
“I was just really excited,” Adam said.
“The teacher said ‘what’s the app?’ and I was like, I don’t know, I thought it was cool that we were starting a project to help kids solve problems, and then we decided to create it.
That’s when we started thinking about it as a project.”
Adam said the app wasn’t a complete redesign, but instead a “little tweak” that “saved some of the ideas.”
Adam said he used to create his projects in the evenings, so the idea to create the app while he was still awake was something that he thought of over and over again.
Adam and his father, Saman, also helped to make the app a reality.
When the Gourlers bought a new house in 2017, they built the kitchen sink into a tablet to make a “big, clean sink” that could be used to make food and keep track of how much water was in the fridge.
Adam said that they were inspired to create The Project because they didn’t have much experience in this area.
“The idea was to create something that’s not only a great learning tool, but it’s a great teaching tool,” Adam told NBC.
“And we found it very easy to put together and the amount of people that used it to learn math and stuff was amazing,” Saman said.
Adam said that while he didn’t always have access to his iPad, he did have access on a Mac.
“My dad had an iPad, and he would use it for our projects,” Adam added.
“He would create all these little projects that were like little games for us.”
Adam told NBC about the inspiration for the app.
“It’s kind of an opportunity for me to take a little project, and I wanted to have a little bit of a challenge for myself,” he said.
He said he took the time to build a website and test the app out with a few hundred users.
Adam also told NBC the idea was inspired by his parents.
“They always told me, you know, don’t be afraid to fail,” he added.
“I had always been a big fan of computers,” Sam said.
Sam said that after the app was launched, he saw a lot more people using it, and that it became the top download in his family’s library of software.
“This is the biggest success story I’ve ever seen,” he told NBC of the app’s popularity.
Adam also told The Daily Dot that he is looking forward to developing more ideas with his family.
“With this app, we want to see how we can do more with this project, to make sure it is just as good as it’s been before,” he shared.
“This is just a little tweak, but we’re really excited to see it take off, and hopefully people will use it as much as we do,” Sam added.
Adam, who works as a web developer at the time, said he has already started a few more projects in his career.
He hopes that his efforts can inspire others to start their own projects, and said that he has also heard from other students who are using The Project to solve problems in their classrooms.
